Vented Attics, Unvented Attics, and Shingles. What’s Good, What’s Bad?

Not a month has gone by in the last thirteen years, that I wasn’t asked about attic venting. Should they be foamed? If you do, should you use open cell or closed cell? Shingles and foam? How far apart baffles should be placed? These are just a few of the questions insulators face every day. At IDI, answering these questions and helping you succeed is what we live for.

With that in mind, when we come across great resources or information you can use in the field, we want to share it. A few years back we shared the resource of buildingscience.com as a place to find solid answers to a myriad of challenges. What we didn’t discuss is the newsletter they send out.

Since the site covers all facets of construction, it’s not very often they focus on things impacting insulation contractors. Well, in last month’s newsletter (BSI – 141 Shakespeare Does Roofs) Dr. Joe Lstiburek provides insights that I will likely use again and again. It is educational, an enjoyable read, and a solid reference when the time arises.

Hopefully this resource helps you at a time you need it most. If you have questions on building science or anything about insulation products, reach out to your local branch or any of us at IDI. We don’t just say we want to earn your business, whether you are just getting into the fiberglass & spray foam industry or you are a long-time veteran, our goal is to help you thrive and grow your business.
